Babies, Alabama, Extra Money, Tweet of the Week and SGS – Open Item

Hoosier Access Open Item covers more moped laws, economic development strategies, and building voter data models.

Good morning, today is Saturday the 13th of July and this is your Open Item.

First and foremost, Hoosier Access would like to give our best wishes to Don Bates Jr. and his wife, Amy, on the birth of their twins yesterday! The twin brother and sister are doing well according to Bates via his Facebook page, as is his wife. Congratulations to the Bates family! Given all the conflict in Texas surround the rights of little ones, it’s nice to be able to celebrate a human victory, not just a legislative victory. If you want to catch up on what happened last night in Texas, just search Twitter for #StandForLife.

In other news, our Senior Editor, Mark Warner, and Indiana Young Republican Chairman Michael Neal are in Mobile, AL for the Young Republican National Convention. Neal will be running as Midwest Vice-Chair today and we wish him the best of luck! It would be great for a representative from the Hoosier state to be part of the National Leadership of this organization.

As we mentioned in yesterday’s Open Item, Governor Mike Pence and State Auditor (soon to be Indiana GOP State Chairman) Tim Berry announced that the state of Indiana ended the fiscal year with a $1.94 billion surplus in the bank. During the announcement, Pence stated that the state brought in an extra $98 million that the General Assembly was not expecting. However, the amount is not enough to trigger the automatic refunds that were instituted under former Governor (and current Purdue University President) Mitch Daniels. House Democrats are saying that the large reserve doesn’t matter though. RTV6 has House Minority Leader, Representative Scott Pelath, saying the following:

“The leaders of our state worship these surplus numbers like they are ends in and of themselves. The fact is that these numbers only matter to the extent that our people are prospering. In that context, these numbers mean nothing…Our unemployment rate still remains around 8 percent. Families still are struggling to keep their heads above water. Our local schools still must grapple with doing more with less. Thanks to the stubbornness of our leadership, too many families still must rely upon the emergency room as their only health care option.” – House Minority Leader Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City

Governor Pence does not see it the same way though. During his press conference with Auditor Tim Berry, Pence was quoted as saying:

“Indiana is strong and growing stronger, and the closeout report confirms the balanced approach that we took in the enacted budget…It is a lead selling point for the state of Indiana. It is an asset to all of our businesses and it is directly related to job creation.” - Governor Mike Pence, R-Indiana

One final bit of news for today, the Indiana BMV has decided to issue credits to those Hoosier motorists who were overcharged for driver’s licenses. The Commissioner of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles was quoted:

“In order to make Hoosiers whole, we believe it is important to return the overcharge directly to those who have been impacted. It is the right thing to do.” - Commissioner R. Scott Waddell, Indiana BMV

Do not forget to vote in this week’s Tweet of the Week poll. Currently, last week’s winner and former Hoosier, Mike “Sully” Sullivan is in a strong lead holding close to 50% of all votes cast. However, two of our very own editors are in the hunt. Emily Borkholder and Matt Brinkman still have a chance. So, take a look at the nominees and vote!

Which of the below is the best Tweet of the Week? (Week ending 7/11/13)

  • @Sully21 - "This call may be recorded for quality assurance" - NSA (51%, 31 Votes)
  • @hostagehoosier - A hospital refusing to say what Teresa Hines Kerry is sick with is not a conspiracy. Stop it. | ‏@chefbrink - @hostagehoosier Actually I'm pretty sure it's called HIPPA. (26%, 16 Votes)
  • @Sully21 - Dems blast the GOP over getting campaign money from (insert group here) then turn around and swim in pool of Union campaign cash #Hypocrites (10%, 6 Votes)
  • @AriFleischer - Based on what's happening in NYC, I'm looking forward to the Corzine-McGreevey primary in NJ. (5%, 3 Votes)
  • @SooperMexican - #ThingsLessPhonyThanJohnKerry: Manti T'eo's Girlfriend. (5%, 3 Votes)
  • @bigchaz: 1) escape burning aircraft, 2) run 20ft, 3) take pic, 4) think about filter choice, 5) post to Instagram (3%, 2 Votes)
  • @cmdeb - Palin will consider running for Senate right up 'til the filing date, as with POTUS. Gets her some attention, $, that's it. (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 61
