Indianapolis, IN – Mike Pence today issued his formal response to Governor Mitch Daniels’ request for input on the implementation of the 2010 health care act, calling for the state not to set up a state-run health care exchange.

“ObamaCare erodes the freedom of every Hoosier. It will increase the cost of health care and cripple job creation in our state,” said Pence. “I believe Indiana should take no part in this deeply flawed healthcare bureaucracy.”

In a letter dated July 30, Daniels asked each of the gubernatorial candidates for their recommendations on setting up a state-run health exchange or accepting a federally-run exchange as a default, and on selecting an essential benefits package.

Pence met with Daniels on August 15 to discuss the state’s options. He detailed the rationale for his recommendations in a five-page letter that was delivered to the Governor today.

The cost of setting up a health care exchange in Indiana could be at least $50 million per year and will raise health care premiums. Further, the Affordable Care Act will raise taxes on Hoosier businesses and will cost jobs.

In addition, Pence pointed to the many questions about the health care act as further reason for Indiana to refrain from implementing the law.

“There is too much uncertainty surrounding the Affordable Care Act for Indiana to even consider implementing our own exchange,” said Pence. “The national debate is far from over and the regulatory, fiscal and legal implications have the potential to cost Hoosier taxpayers and employers millions.”

Pence recommended that the state choose an essential benefits package that does not go beyond the current requirements of Indiana law and respects Hoosier values by not mandating abortion coverage.

He also hailed the Healthy Indiana Plan as an innovative, consumer-driven model that will increase access to health care and drive down the cost. Pence called for HIP to serve as the starting point for all future discussions of health care reform in Indiana.

“Hoosiers deserve to know where each candidate for governor stands on this critical issue,” said Pence.
