A Year Later: Millions of Jobs and Trillions of Dollars Short

A Year Later: Millions of Jobs and Trillions of Dollars Short

    By Congressman Pete Sessions (TX-32)

    February 22, 2010

One year ago, my Republican colleagues and I saw the writing on the wall.  An economic “stimulus” package with a huge price tag would only cause record deficits and debt, and produce little if any jobs.  Republicans stood together last year as we do today in the interest of the American people for real solutions that provide jobs, put Americans back to work, and ensure a prosperous nation for all of us.

The Obama Administration assured the American people that the “stimulus” bill would keep the unemployment rate from exceeding 8%.  Unfortunately, this promise has proven to be empty political rhetoric as more Americans continue to lose their jobs every day.  The unemployment rate has risen from 7.6% in February 2009 to its current level of 9.7%.  In November 2009, the unemployment rate reached 10.2%, marking the first time the unemployment rate surpassed 10% since 1983.

Additionally, this year, for the first time ever, America reached a record deficit of $1.4 trillion, which is more than triple the deficit from the previous year.  Public debt has also risen to $12.3 Trillion, putting every American citizen on the hook for over $40,000 of debt.  This debt, coupled with the Obama Administration’s $1.6 Trillion budget deficit for this year, makes our grandchildren and great grandchildren liable for Democrats’ lack of fiscal responsibility and accountability.

The talk of the town in Washington, D.C. is that Democrats in Congress are threatening the American people with yet another “jobs bill.”  This country cannot afford more failed polices of borrowing, taxing and spending.  Congress needs to offer the American public real solutions that put Americans back to work, create opportunities for small businesses to grow and expand, and ensure an opportunity for future economic prosperity for all.
